Topic: World Map - 15SEP10 Posted: 15 Sep 2010 at 18:58 |
Hi all,
As requested, here's the Illyriad World Map.
Please note the following:
- This is a full size map, where one pixel = one square, therefore it is a fairly large size (2001x2001 pixels in total)
- It shows, in broad-brush terms, the main topographical features of the continent
- It is pretty accurate in most all respects, but we do occasionally edit parts the world - and so your "master" copy of the map should be the one ingame. This is useful for reference.
- This map has not yet had biomes applied to it, so expect a later version to appear that contains other major features such as Desert, Polar Ice, Jungle and so on
TO VIEW THE COMPLETE MAP, RIGHT CLICK ON THE IMAGE BELOW AND CHOOSE "VIEW IMAGE" or "OPEN IMAGE IN NEW WINDOW" (the exact option will depend on your web browser).
Best wishes,
GM Stormcrow

So, there'll be at least two more versions - one with biomes and one with factions / regions on it.
In the fullness of time (with UI v2) this map will be ingame, and you will be able to apply not only pre-defined overlays over it (such as Factions or Regions) but you will also be able to see (eg) the location of your alliance members.

Oh, and - because I've been asked this a few times already...
The slightly terrifying "demonic otherworldly lurker reaching out towards you with a tail (or whip in his right hand)" that can be seen with the skull-like face just above the -200|-200 marker was
entirely random from the fractal algorithm...
Freaky, huh?!

I'm noticing that the real map and the image are a bit off. E.g. the world map at -100|50 shows a river meeting a lake with light and dense forest surrounding the mouth of the river.
In the real map there is no forest in that area (nor cities to prevent there being forest there).

500, -100 looks like a ghost clown... (Gotta be zoomed in to see the beady eyes...)
400,-400 looks like an upside down face..

Hi KP,
Yes, there are some differences, but they'll be fairly minor.
As mentioned, the ingame map is definitely the primary source, and this should largely be used for reference - though we are working on a way of getting it to "auto" update from the source data. Or rather, we have a way already of doing this - although it's slightly complicated by the "reseeding" we've done of many zones (plus the preservation of player/sov squares) - but this isn't insurmountable.
Best,
SC

I don't like the fact that there are so few oceans, and ONLY on the southern edge of the map.
But except for that, Awesome update, SC.

If rather than just changing the edges of the map to be oceans you could potentially expand adding ocean squares, then loop the map. It could even be potentially made so that islands become important regions when going from the top of the map to the bottom. Perhaps introduce supplies, or a need for repairs etc. In all though very useful.
I'd still like to hear if there's any plans to entice elves into forested regions, also appart from the extra iron dwarves need an incentive to stay in the mountains rather then move to the forests.

I thought that the world was going to be like a continent, with water on all sides... instead i only see an ocean on one side. why?

Cool map but it begs the question, what's west, north, and east of us?
