I chose dwarf cause I like dwarves. I didnt know anything about gameplay mechanics when creating my main account.
My alt is an elf because they have the fastest cavalry and, in my opinion, OP archers. They also have fast diplomats. And their cities look nice.

Humans - don't live long enough
dwarfs - are very greedy
Orcs - are very smelly
but we elves are just PERFECTION

Elves are the best, mainly because they have the fastest units, which means it is impossible to determine where a hostile elven diplomatic mission came from unless the thieved player is also an elf.
Also, the elven sentinel is the overall best unit to have in a standing army.

When tracking any sort of diplomatic unit (even elven) - networking is your friend.

Last time I checked - The vast majority of accounts created are Human, with elves a not too ditant second place... dwarves take up around 20% and Orcs less than 10%.
I think the figures speak for themselves.
Personally I picked Orc on a whim. If I had know anything about the racial characteristics (particularly unit stats - which are arguable the ONLY important racial characteristic [at the moment] - which weren't even available when I created my account) I would certainly have picked elf or human.
Having said that - it is nice being a member of a select bunch who do not naturally follow the herd.
So long fight the Orcs - may our battles be bloody and glorious - and may we forever remain the characterful minority.

Well I used to be an elf and enjoyed the speed of elven units and defence qualities of sentinels until I got a knock on the head and ended up in someone's cooking pot. Now Braggie says...
