Just a little thing to add:
There are easy ways to lose our units for nothing, like sending them to the HoC when it is beating (they then disappear, do not serve any purpose and are wasted) or sending very large groups to the temples. It is frustrating. However I've also witnessed that, should one send small groups (i. e. of about 10 diplos) to the temples when it's beating, he/she could rather easily get more tentacle than he/she needs. Drop rate looks to be about 1/15 (group-wise) or so. Not tremendously high. I've not been able to figure this out when the Heart was still beating and that's why I still feel a bit frustrated too. But if the rules do not change next time we'll be able to fill our storehouses with tentacular appendage. If we still need it ;) |

You're forgetting that to send several groups, we also need several commanders.
Some ppl have high level commanders that are not willing to sacrifice for just a slim chance of getting (or not) a tentacle.. Per city i can only send 1 commander. x9 that's 9 missions. With a 1/5 chance of getting a tentacle, that wouldnt suffice. Edited by Tyrande Whisperwinds - 11 Mar 2014 at 12:24 |

Since you can choose to send diplomatic or military units I'd rather use diplos. They are generally cheaper, reasonably fast and do not require commanders.

@Tyrande Whisperwinds
Well, you do not actually need to send any commanders, supposedly you can just send diplomatic units. However, as explained in the previous page, I sent 1k and 1.1k diplomatic units...but not a tentacle is sight despite getting visited by very many corrupted elves. Perhaps, as suggested by others, next time we should try sending multiple loads of about 15 diplomatic units to see what happens. I really must say, after all it took to get that bloody heart beating again, this has been a huge anti-climax!! |

Yes it does seem at the moment to be a complete waste of time, getting the full set of 20 is going to be hard, I have but 1.
Also what on earth (or on Illy) has collecting corrupted tentacles to do with discovering such items as the Elven Bow, it seems to be the very opposite to me esp when you look at what the discovery is supposed to require. And another question is why all our troops merrily marched off to oblivion knowing that all who went before them had perished, perhaps it as someone suggested they are all actually now sat about in some overcrowded tavern. Gameplay wise this "Mystery" appears to be a very disappointing waste of our time and game reources and I for one do not feel it hangs true. Edited by Morgweneth - 11 Mar 2014 at 14:29 |

Spamming diplomats seems to be the most effective strategy. I observed a 4.53% drop rate from 927 groups, almost all were only a single unit triggered by a Messenger.

The only way we'll succeed in getting the discovery is if players share, which I doubt will happen.
I have the required 5 elf and 5 human tentacles and i'm waiting on 75+ corrupted armies to attack me. I should get the 5 dwarf tentacles from them. All i'll need is 5 orc tentacles...Who wants to sell them to me so I can get the discovery and share it with everybody else who wants it? |

I sent 500 groups of diplomats of vaious sizes and got back 25 tentacles. Single scouts or messengers seemed to drop them just as often as large groups of scouts or spies or troops. So it does seem like there is around 5 percent drop rate per group you send. And messengers work which is nice since the whole map can reach the temple while the heart is beating with messengers.
Not so helpful to know after the fact, but at least next time we get it beating again we will know more how it works. |
