Suggestion:
University, to complement the Library.
It has
two
three main functions:
- To reduce the research time by 30%, 15%, 7.5%, etc.
This would be useful to a player in the mid-growth phase: building plots can be sacrificed for a University building, to accelerate research into specialism. This would be especially useful if the research paths become very long (which I'd like).
- To give a little extra +research/hr ... but not too mcuh!
This gives the building a reason to exist beyond the mid-phase. When all required research is done, there would otherwise be no need for the building. I wouldn't want this building to upset the game balance, so I'm only proposing a +5% +res/hr bonus from this building at L20.
- A prerequisite to some advanced research
If some research paths seem a bit too easy, then the University could be a price to pay for the advanced research. This advanced research could be speculative, so that the research time is approximate on undertaking the research, and some future elements of the research tree are invisible.

Don't like it, research is the one thing you can't speed up with
P. Only very indirectly (capture a big or formerly big town with some research done) research can be accelerated at all. I'm a modest
P buyer, using it mostly for instant building, but I don't want research advantages for sale.

I think you've hit upon the best argument against this suggestion.
If the University buildings were not allowed to be instantly-completed using Prestige, would that help?

We've just gotten 12 new buildings and no new plots and you want MORE buildings?
PLEASE GOD NO!

I like the idea!
For those that don't, how about we take it to a new direction then?
Albatross, I hope you don't take this as a hijack, it is not.
How about we expand this... Instead of a new building, how about a building upgrade?
Library level 20 -> University level 1
Storehouse level 20 -> Warehouse 1
Barracks level 20 -> infantry, archery, etc level 1
etc.

I don't mind a constructive heckle :o)
So
Sisren's "upgrade" option effectively gives us L21-40. Generalising this, it breaks up the 'progression' of benefits into
groups of 20 levels each: L1-20, L21-40, etc. Each group has a different benefit scale, and possibly unlocks a research or capability group elsewhere. I would expect the construction of levels in the more advanced groups to demand advanced resources, crafted resources, or raw materials, but not necessarily >300k basics.

I don't mind the plot restriction, so long as everyone has the same restrictions (or opportunities to overcome them) overall. The restriction forces us to focus on specialisms, so I see it not as a hindrance; more of a concentrating influence.
