I kind of think it may be interesting to have Traders be more like commanders.

Give them names. And the more trades they make the more experience they get and you can then research skills to select for them.

Well off the top of my head I suggest the following.

XP: Based on gold value traded (In this case I feel people may try and artificially boost their xp like trade score so I say put a reasonable max on it per transaction)
Number of orders
Number of items shipped
Or some combination of.

As for what they can do.  You would lvl these up the same as commanders currently do.

1. Lower taxes
2. Increased van speed for vans under the Trader (Command)
3. Increased load capacity for vans
4. Better chance of running through blockades, and receiving through blockades.
5. If diplo's eventually can raid/steal from hubs trader would boost defense against that.
6. Increased carrying capacity for gatherer's (not sure how exactly this would work with command)
7. Extra vans recruited under Trader
8. Teleport goods :D

Great idea  though.

great idea maybe a different bonus depending if you trade in hubs or in the 'normal' market. I think you sum it up pretty good thought DD

I like it.  Advanced Traders could also develop something like hawala networks and trade in advanced goods (like Mana and Research points).

I think it would be cool to be able to not only give them names but have a little space to give them a description too. Like if you wanted to give them a bio for instance, or list their notable trade achievements.

Maybe they are called like Trade Experts, or Extraordinaires, or Specialists.

Skills could be item specific. Reducing tax for buying and selling bows, for example.

All in all, I love this idea.

I like the idea.
My traders already got names, but I cant write them anywhere in current system...

Levelling traders also sounds good to me. Instead of combat experience, they could get experience by trade. Surely trader that handled billion gold worth of sales is more experienced than trader that sold 1 clay for example... Perhaps wine donations could also be used to level up trader. From the earliest time in written history (Herodotus) we learn that business is done more smoothly with presence of large quantities of this exquisite intoxicating drink...
