why are the highlands green and the lowlands the glacier, shouldn't the highlands be filled with snow and the lowlands green?

Maybe it's for the same reason that Greenland is mostly icy and Iceland is mostly green?

Greenland was called Greenland as a marketing ploy by Eric the Red to try to get people to move there.  Sort of like why there is a Rose Parade in Pasadena in January (started by developers trying to sell people property).  Although California actually has nice weather.

It could very well be running water beneath the surface.  But I'm a little hesitant to get too deep into over analyzing natural processes of the game.  I don't think we are given enough information on natural processes such as prevailing winds, tectonic activity, etc... to make too much over the current geography of the land.  Throw in the supernatural (magic) factor and applying what we know about the Earth and applying it to this game may not be a safe assumption.  

These curiosities could lead to interesting story lines if the DEVS are watching from underneath their perma-rainbows.
