[12:50]<Pellinell> you mean the land claim war in bl ?
[12:51]<Martilicious> Nope Pelli, more important than the land claim war [12:51]<Martilicious> I am starting the war to end all wars [12:51]<Pellinell> oooo fun [12:52]<Pellinell> can i take part [12:52]<Martilicious> of course [12:52]<Martilicious> the war is the MATHS war [12:52]<The Faceless One> The Math(s) war! [12:52]<Pellinell> awesome [12:52]<The Faceless One> Pell is on our side. [12:52]<Pellinell> can i siege arte ?? [12:52]*Sir Edwin quietly replaces Martilicious' sword with a cricket bat. [12:52]<Martilicious> hmm, is he? [12:53]<Martilicious> I shall win the war with my skill, cunning and calculator [12:53]<Pellinell> lol [12:53]<Curmudgeon> *skills [12:53]<Martilicious> my skill is all encompassing [12:53]<DePaul> you have the right angle Marti? [12:53]<DePaul> You're so acute [12:54]<Karl Aegis> that was me [12:55]<Sir Edwin> Surely if it's a maths war then both sides will always be equal? [12:55]<Martilicious> hmm [12:55]<Martilicious> Good point Sir E [12:55]<Martilicious> could be a log war then.... [12:55]<Martilicious> hehehe [12:55]<Mistery> sounds more like a Debit/Credit war to me [12:56]<Sir Edwin> Ratio wars! The golden ratio might not win, but it's the most beautiful. [12:56]<Karl Aegis> Derivative Matrix war, please. [12:56]<The Faceless One> All armies in the math war with imaginary troops must be called "i" [12:56]<Sa'Belle> If there's going to be a Debit/Credit war then someone better start paying me [12:56]<Sa'Belle> Cos that's work hours talk only [12:56]<Martilicious> mine are called pi [12:56]<Martilicious> they are infinite [12:56]<Mistery> but I am at work [12:56]<DePaul> so only a little more than 3 troops per division? [12:57]<hanable> all troops in the math war will have 4x4s not horses [12:57]<danua> mine are the irrational troops, i send em in amounts of sqrt(2), sqrt(3).... [12:57]<The Faceless One> I'd think they'd all have 3.1415926535 troops in them. [12:57]<DePaul> exactly, a little more than 3 [12:57]<Martilicious> infinite (see above) [12:57]<DePaul> decimals are important [12:57]<danua> what about the infinitesimal troops? [12:58]<hanable> will the battles be reacuring [12:58]<Martilicious> they're all mine [12:58]<DePaul> move it just one spot and my paycheck either looks REALY good or REALLY not [12:58]<The Faceless One> Are you trying to make a point, marti? [12:58]<The Faceless One> Because it didn't graph my attention if you did. [12:58]<DePaul> she was being obtuse [12:59]<Martilicious> *wonders how long DP had that one waiting [12:59]<Martilicious> *cos it ewasepic [12:59]<Martilicious> was epic [13:00]<The Faceless One> Hmm... marti is a member of SIN... [13:00]<DePaul> better than COS [13:00]<The Faceless One> That's an odd tangent to go off on DP [13:00]<DePaul> but the reciprocal is brilliant [13:01]<hanable> big words hurt my crainium [13:01]<AJJ> psst, DePAul... [13:01]<DePaul> yes? [13:01]<The Faceless One> It's probably cosecant think of any puns to say. [13:01]<AJJ> *whispers* I can see your TAN lines... [13:01]<Martilicious> Pelli probably reversed out, fast [13:02]<DePaul> let's get back to a common denominator [13:02]<Curmudgeon> That'd be a sin. [13:03]<DePaul> Marti's epic war will surely divide us all [13:03]<Martilicious> er, minus the random extra letter [13:03]<Adrasteia> You don't want Pelli involved anyway. He'd just siege it. [13:03]<AJJ> Not if we expand the brackets of our minds o.O [13:03]<Martilicious> One War to end All Wars [13:03]<Curmudgeon> Somebody should keep a log. [13:03]<Martilicious> Pelli would add to the power ? [13:03]<hanable> look on the plus side it might not be a negative outcome [13:04]<DePaul> exponentially? [13:04]<The Faceless One> I will save a log, a rhythmic quality is emerging which I find really interesting. [13:05]<ALyon> Too many Illyrians go off on a tangent [13:05]<The Faceless One> Too late, you missed the prime time to say that one Alyon. [13:05]<ALyon> alright TFO -- I'll leave and make pie then [13:06]<AJJ> Alyon needs to do a 180 and scroll up [13:06]<Sir Edwin> In a Tangent away from the idea of war; does anyone want to Sine peace declarations? We'll also need someone to Cosine. [13:06]<DePaul> I need to multiply my coffee intake [13:07]<Martilicious> *trying to think how to get differential equations into the covo* [13:07]<The Faceless One> You have to differentiate between what's been said and what hasn't. [13:07]<DePaul> then equate the two [13:07]*Elfs Bane raises his cup of coffee and salutes GC [13:07]<Elfs Bane> morning everyone [13:07]<Liliana> This conversation is fabulous [13:07]<AJJ> And try not to get confused by the tessalation of puns [13:08]<Deadwrong> good morning to you as well [13:08]<AJJ> Hello, Bane! [13:08]<AJJ> You are a welcome addition to the mathematical conversation [13:08]<Martilicious> + 3.141 Sir Edwin [13:08]<danua> this tesseract of puns? [13:09]<Snorri> With all this going on how do you function? [13:09]<The Faceless One> From our keyboard pen rose something amazing. [13:09]<DePaul> well played [13:09]<hanable> this game has its ups and downs but i think i may be converted [13:09]*The Faceless One is getting too subtle in his puns, I doubt anyone got that one. [13:09]<danua> the real problem is drinking and deriving [13:10]<DePaul> e have to renumerate this to the GMs [13:10]<Martilicious> I just reverted to the standard 'lol' [13:10]<DePaul> we* [13:10]<Liliana> refined, TFO. That's the word you're looking for [13:10]<The Faceless One> It's en-tiley possible I am wrong though. [13:10]<AJJ> I wonder how we'll sum it all up... [13:11]<AJJ> the conversation is taking up a large area [13:11]<Elfs Bane> back to square 1 i see [13:11]<hanable> with a positive atitude ajj [13:11]<The Faceless One> We might have to integrate a wider variety of subject matter. [13:11]<Snorri> always integral to life [13:11]<Keir> this convo is having negative effects on my brain [13:12]<Snorri> and my imaginary self [13:12]<AJJ> I'm sure it has an explicit function [13:12]<DePaul> everyone has something to add [13:12]<danua> the puns here are the limit of the function x divided by n , where n goes to zero [13:12]<Martilicious> it's having negative effects on my life lol, I cannot stop laughing [13:12]<Keir> Times, a changing [13:12]<DePaul> just don't PI yourself laughing [13:13]<The Faceless One> Y would you Xpect anything different, marti? [13:13]<The Faceless One> All I axis for a few more good puns. [13:14]<AJJ> Trying not to fose my locus [13:14]<Elfs Bane> you should expand your radius then TFO [13:14]<Martilicious> *thanks the heavens for someone rescuing me from chat comedy and awesomeness* [13:14]<The Faceless One> I hope I can derive a few more. [13:14]<hanable> you just cantalever it alone [13:14]<AJJ> resorting to spoonerisms is a true sign of desperation haha [13:14]<DePaul> Nope we're back on the chart [13:15]<AJJ> We shall run out of puns soon, in all probability [13:15]<danua> stop with the hyperbola, then AJJ [13:15]<AJJ> I'm trying not to be too recursive! [13:15]<Keir> stop stretching the truth [13:16]<AJJ> There is much more to me beneath the surface [13:16]*The Faceless One gives marti an anvil made out of lead and leaves [13:17]<DePaul> an anvil made of leaves? [13:17]<Snorri> The faceless one has acheived entropy!! [13:17]<Curmudgeon> mead and leaves woulda been better. [13:17]<Martilicious> yeah, the leaves kinda add an eco aspect [13:18]<DePaul> I was trying to get circumference in here, but couldn't. Sorry Marti, I failed. [13:18]<Martilicious> I was trying to start a war and we got total comedy [13:18]<Martilicious> and awesomeness [13:18]<DePaul> like most wars [13:19]<Martilicious> i shall have to restart my warmongering tomorrow [13:20]<Martilicious> the great MATHS war [13:20]<hanable> marti start a speelling war [13:20]<Martilicious> MATHS will dominate the math minority [13:20]<Elfs Bane> i think i ll stay out of anythign that has to do with maths [13:20]<Martilicious> maths first, spelling next [13:21]<Karl Aegis> Maths, who needs it? [13:21]<Martilicious> You [13:21]*Keir pledges his self to the maths cause [13:21]*DePaul pours Marti a glass of wine [13:21]<Martilicious> yay! result! [13:21]<Karl Aegis> Maths must be the key to beam weaponry [13:21]<Martilicious> yup [13:21]<Elfs Bane> lets change the song .... Maths what is it goof for! [13:21]<Elfs Bane> absolutely nothing! [13:22]< Elfs Bane> good* [13:22]<Martilicious> maths beats math, every time [13:22]<Snorri> I hear it is applicable to Physics? [13:22]<Karl Aegis> Watch out for non-Euclidean calculus, though. that way leads to madness [13:23]<Martilicious> whatever, I will win [13:23]<Snorri> yes, it is hard to get into that space [13:24]<Snorri> relatively speaking that is [13:24]<hanable> space theres nothing in it [13:24]<Snorri> That was my line [13:24]<Karl Aegis> we're all in space right now [13:24]<Martilicious> omg, how am i breathing? [13:24]<Snorri> and you're point? [13:24]<hanable> mind the gap hehe [13:25]*Karl Aegis is the point. |

Hmm, the war seemed to cause a great deal of division between the those taking part and I am upset that the conversation was minus me, but on the plus side the total number involved was very encouraging and may produce a multitude of similar threads.

here you go.....just to add to the confusion........
http://separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.co.uk/2007/03/maths.html
i.e. The blogger says it's "Math" irrespective of whether you are UK or US English speaker. It seems that adding an s on the end has only been around for a relatively short time due to a mistaken idea that the word Mathematics is actually a plural - which this blogger says it isn't.
The OED, on the other hand, says that it IS a plural as it's a contraction of "Mathematical(adjective) Sciences".
Not that it matters either way as its just an abbreviation and people will use whichever they want to suit themselves.
BY the way I'm UK, and was taught that the terminology was "Math" in school (although that was many moons ago), but others I know who also were schooled in the UK were taught that it was "Maths", so I don't think there is any definitive answer.
