Here's a question. I've been looking for a goal to reach in the short-term and one thing I would like to do is raise my global ranking. What determines your ranking for each score (e.g. Attack, magic, trade, etc...). What are some ways to raise your ranking?

Rankings are largely irrelevant.
Trade is how much you sell. If you want a high score, make an alt, and sell back and forth to yourself. Attack and defense are determined by fighting. Tournaments contribute to high scores, or make an alt and fight yourself. Diplomacy is how many and how large your successful missions are, or incoming missions you stop. If you want a high score, make an alt and scout yourself with large forces. Quest is how many quests you complete from the tavern. Research is how much research you complete by point value. Build is (apparently) how many building levels you complete. Magic is how much mana you spend on spells. If you want a high score, add mana to spells you cast on yourself. |

I forgot to mention, these factors do not contribute equally to score. Population and research seem to be the dominant influence by an order of magnitude (perhaps because the others are so easily faked).

There's also the option to not really do any of this, just play the game and your rank will definitely go up.
The sense of achievement from actually getting the right score, and being a very high rank is a good feeling. If you like something that is for looks and doesn't reflect your hard work, then I don't see how it helps you in anyway. Prestige scrolls made it too easy for players to buy prestige and sell it in the game market, making some of the richest people in the game with high scores. Reminds me of pay-to-win games.

Trading back and forth with an alt to increase trade score is a money loser because of taxes.
In order to increase rank, stay active in the game. Build stuff and research stuff, attack NPCs, participate in tournaments to raise defense rankings. Scouting, spying and thieving abandoned cities that have defending thieves can raise diplomatic score. For trade, I recommend harvesting some stuff and selling it. You can also sell basic resources, but that will take a long time to raise scores.
Basically what I do when I pay attention to score at all is set myself goals for absolute score or increase in score. Like see how much I can raise my attack score for the lowest amount of troop losses. And then use the items that are dropped by the NPCs I am attacked and sell them to increase my trade score.
