As I engage in Illy global chat these days, I have been wondering about the value of having a "truly persistent world."

More specifically, I'm wondering about the value of a persistent world that is designed to produce friction without just as carefully designed incentives for collaboration.  There are in Illy now plenty of opportunities for us to annoy each other, but fewer opportunities for us to delight, entertain and assist each other.  In this environment, a "persistent world" can grow stale.

I think one of the (many) things that could be useful in the game would be more opportunities to collaborate rather than compete, especially across alliances.  Right now the only thing that requires collaboration in Illy is sending our troops to be sacrificed to Audrey -- which is not exactly engaging.

Live factions could provide one venue for this sort of collaboration.  Having rare items actually be useful could be another (that could create both competition and collaboration.)  Really any new development release provides some opportunity for collaboration as we work to define the mechanics and root out the bugs.

"Persistent" doesn't have to mean "stale."

What are others' ideas?  Do you find Illy a bit stale?  Is persistency the issue?  Would you welcome more opportunities for collaboration, or is more friction the answer? Or some combination of both?

Persistence is not the issue. In fact, the lack of an 'endgame' is one of the draws of illy.
The staleness is a direct result of stagnancy. And the stagnancy is a direct result of too many wars all in a row, leaving players no time (or desire) to engage in collaborative efforts.

When was the last clue found, for instance, to unlock the spirit bow et al? What is the Fortune Teller really about? What is Duraz Kurag? And the Misted Lands?

These are just some of the things we could be concentrating our efforts on. Maybe we can, after the big alliances are done wiping each other off the map. Maybe that will solve the crowding issue, too!

Changing the game to something other than most people signed up for is not a very possible tactic to ever come to pass, so I do not think that this point would ever go anywhere.

As far as things to make us collaborate AND compete, there could have been many more things that could have been done (and have nothing to do with the persistency of the world) than just tournaments, but this is all we got anyway so ... *shrug*

Just like a "before and after" ad ! ahahahaah :p

Real world is persistent, but never stale. We have Christmas every year and we all enjoy Christmas.

I'd rather have  the system run the tournaments than the devs do it manually all the time. A recurring King's tournament every Feb 21st would be great. The rules and content can be same, 'king of the hill' type competition on every region's tournament square.  No two tournaments will actually be the same because players and alliances keep changing.

Doing 3 hand crafted tournaments in a span of 6 months and then going another 8 months without any events .. that sometimes become stale.

it isnt the problem of a 'persistent world', which means that it persists even while players are offline. the lack of content is the problem. for myself, the lack of a rich backstory and history to the world is also a problem. these things are what make or break an MMO. while its all well and good that we fight each other, although not so good lately it seems, having world events and more characteristics to Illyriad would be a boon and godsend. Why can we not have more to do, with a more dynamic quest system? have the factions up and running and causing problems for players? why not have world wide events, like some sort of incursion with a new non playable race outside the borders of Illy that could be randomised and happen with out any clue to players, and take up to 3 months to get rid of? i can assure the Dev team, you make this kind of content for the players, and we'll more than likely stay and even tell the newbs stories of how we beat back the incroaching frog people from the west, or something of the like.

maybe not what the thread is solely about, but maybe some suggestions to get the devs creativity fired up

I think it's about 50% perspiration and 50% precipitation...
