Troops and diplomatic units demand it as salary; so its used for army and spies upkeep

You need the gold to produce certain items/units too.

Though in order to trade gold for goods, you have to have Bartering researched, which requires a lev 5 Marketplace.

and you need 15000 gold each for pioneers/settlers so start saving :) xx
