         Just a thought... could there be a piece of research that, when completed, gave a small bonus to the stats of defending troops when a settlement is attacked.

         so for instance, when this research is complete; if you have 100 militiamen resident in a city they gain a 2% defensive bonus per 100 population of said settlement.  

         I further present the idea this technology should be called "Fyrd". 

The Fyrd, in the Saxon period of Englands history (before it was england) was when the men who worked the land for his lord was called upon to fight for the lord or his king, normally in a defensive capacity. even if they were no more than a farmer. they used what ever tools they could find. 

         just a thought...
