Players quit for all kinds of reasons. You yourself nearly quit, but came back for the war and is now near the top of the list for razing the most active player towns.

This game provides several options, pvp warring being at the bottom. Hunting, gathering and crafting will be affected, for the worse, if confeds tried forcing less than a 10 sq rule onto others.

You need to go back and play the real pvp city building games out there. The only reason they stack towns on top of each other is so you can farm them. The res Illy offers us and the speed of the game negates the need for farming. No need to farm = no need to stack towns close together.

There are tons of dead city building games, why are so many bored vets determined to bring Illy down?

P.S. Ever wonder why there are no swords that give a +10 vs orcs? Ever wonder why no chainmail offers +20 vs elves?...if this is a 'pvp wargame'

Not to have facts get in the way of your hyperbole ....

I think the 10 sq is used as a default because it is built into the mechanics of the game with tenaril and exodus. I'm sort of indifferent to it myself, as personally I'm comfortable with seven, and have allowed settlements a bit closer than that in certain cases. If no policy is posted on another alliances profile specifying their policy I don't feel bound by this "rule" at all, but won't place anything closer than seven.

I do recognize that the 10 square "rule" is probably a wise guide when settling in an area where the neighbors are not confeds, especially without prior communications.
