Topic: Endangered Animals in Illyriad Posted: 13 Sep 2012 at 17:19 |
|
Proposal for the founding of the Illyrian Society for the Protection of Endangered Wildlife (I-SPEW) and the establishment of national preservation parks (NNPs).
Lady Illuminati has recently voiced concern regarding the increasing rarity of certain animal breeds; primarily the Wolgast Aligator and the Garigal (we beleive this creature to stem from Turalia or Zanpur, but due to its sudden and steep decline in numbers we are unable to confirm this).
With respect of our ladys concern (which to be honest confounds even us, as she does not own any land in which these creatures can be hunted); we the council of Illuminati X held a great meeting in which to discuss a possible solution to the dwindling numbers of such creatures.
The problem as we see it.
With the recent advances in technology, hunting has become a hugely profitable business rather than the noble sport and past-time which it once was. This has led to a decline in the populations of many rarer creatures, which in turn seems to have led to those less desirable / profitable creatures increasing in number as they spread to the habitats of those being hunted.
It appears that the Aligator and Garigal have been most effected by this and there numbers have become worryingly low.
A possible solution.
With understanding that animal breed populations seem to increase when that animal is enabled to breed in peace, then eventually migrate to other areas once their population exceeds what their breeding ground can hold. We beleive that these creatures can not only be preserved, but their number increased if certain lands are designated as NPPs. This should ensure a steady supply of such creatures migrating to nearby lands where they can be hunted by all.
Our vision of an NPP.
An NPP would be an area of land (about 20 squares in diametre) in which a certain creature would be protected (i.e. it would be considered a crime to hunt it). However, for such a thing to be established it would require much support from the general society of Illyriad; which is why we make this proposal.
What is required.
Firstly we would need to define which lands are NPPs (and raise people's awareness of this in the forums), for this we would require a volunteer who holds a powerfull city in an area where these creatures once flurished to designate the land (10 squares around his/her city) as an NPP, however doing such a thing without greater support would be ineffectual, therefore the I-SPEW would need to be established as a legislative body over this land, it would require the involvement of many powerfull lords and possibly even alliances as a whole.
Any hunting parties on this land must be scouted by the NPP holder or nearby I-SPEW supporters and if evidence is found that someone is illegally hunting the protected species within its reservation habitat, then some action must be taken against that poacher. I would consider a monetary fine (say 50,000 gold) to be paid to the holder of the NPP as just for a first offence, but feel that if poaching continued by any one person or if they did not pay their fine, then greater force may be necessary from the I-SPEW as a whole. Obviously if the NPP holder were caught poaching themselves then greater punishment would be required.
I beleive if such an organisation came into existance it would help conserve a huntable popultaion of the animals protected and thereby stem the rarity of certain items making them more available to us as a whole, we therefore beseach all the ruling lords of Illyriad to confirm if they would support such an organisation. It would be nice to see the animals restricted from wandering until their initial spawning area can no longer hold their numbers... e.g. Alligators only spawn in the Wolgast swamp - that is, until their numbers reach a max (like 10k or so) and then they continue to spawn and migrate. I find it very odd to see some creatures way outside their own spawning location... (:P) This would be a nice feature, though I know it wasn't what you had in mind.

The last thing we need in Illy is another "established legislative body" telling people how to play and using force. Though I see the idea behind this in context with your whole proposal, I still disagree.
Furthermore, I highly doubt the Dev's would allow some creatures to be completely eradicated from the game. (oh wait, those poor, poor muskrats.... *sigh*)
EDIT: I am not casting a vote in this (above)

I would be more concerned with endangered alliances.

There is no shortage of alliances in Illyriad. New ones spawn every day and there is not much hunting to control their numbers.

With regard to the OP, I think this is an interesting question. Rather than having a big organization, it seems to me that individual players in an area where they wish to protect species could claim large areas of sovereignty and then request/expect that other players would not hunt there. This would have the same effect as I SPEW without creation of a bureaucracy.
While I might be personally concerned in an abstract sense about the availability of gharials and/or alligators, they do not occur in areas in which I have cities, so I don't know that my opinion really matters much.
As a resident of the northeast, I am concerned about the fate of the rare Tamarin Tiger (also called the white tiger). So far fortunately animal parts from these creatures have no known uses, so overhunting has not yet been a problem. However, I have already started a protection organization, Save Tamarin Tigers Order of Protection (STTOP) to safeguard their welfare. So far as I know, I am the only member. Anyone who is interested, please contact me.

Dlords have made a reservation for Poisonous Crawlers in our homeland... or maybe they (Poisonous Crawlers) have decided to make a reservation for them selfs.

Likewise Farra Isle and the Windseeker's islands shall be a safe haven for the legions of hungry caterpillars.
It can only be wished for that some day they can be domesticated, and grown into an army of poisonous Mothras.
