I was wondering if it matters if you make a commander from your spearmen for your swordmen unit?
Or should you make a swordmen commander of your swordmen unit?
Does it influence stats?

It doesn't influence the Divisional Bonuses or most of the generic self bonuses such as Regeneration and Vitality, but it does influence the "Self" bonuses for Attack and Defence, if you're looking to make a one-man heroic killing machine.

Will need to know more details if this is still an issue for you - but please use the ingame Support (Petition) system for these kind of bugs / gameplay issues - as it'll then get to the right people much faster.

Sometimes the UI can bit a tid confusing, so check under your Commanders tab and if you army/division names are listed on that commander, he's in it.
