Personally I doubt either lev I or lev V sov squares will trigger a discovery, but I suppose it gives us something to do.

Yeah, I don't think I will trigger anything either but it will be a good last hurrah sort of thing for me.

If it was 100 lvl 1 sovs, seeing your configuration you could sustain it "easily" at taxes 35-40% and all... but 150...

With 150 lvl 1 sovs, 4 chanceries and 0% taxes, and the alambine done, you should roughly get between -300 and -500 research /h. If of course you claim the closest squares from you.

So it's not sustainable, but if you have millions of research you could keep it like this for months indeed. Even at taxe 35-40% where you would have between -600 and -800 research points/h average i think.

So in theory you can do this as you have good stocks of RP. Though it wouldnt be a good idea to build a city like that on pupose.

About how to achieve this faster... If you have 5 armies with T1 cav coms and T1 cavs in it, and 150 messengers ready... you could just send your armies on occupations for days, claim the land when you can, and recall with your messengers when you can.
In theory, if you keep doing this all day long, it's done in 1 days or 2. But if you use this technic you can take the time you want.

EDIT:

Ps: dont forget to build lvl 1 farmstead on 20 sov tiles, so that you dont have to demolish any buildings (appart from the ones you'd demolish to free up some space for your chanceries).

Just an update:  My current sov claims are not going to change.  I will eat the extra RP costs to avoid the inconvenience that de-leveling sov entails.

I don't have any plans to find a way to make 150 sov squares sustainable.  I simple plan to claim up 150 to see if there is a discovery waiting.  Depending on the resource drain at that time I will keep the claims up and running for 1 week to 1 month before dropping them all.

I will probably enlist the help of sitters from H? to keep a constant stream/watch on the squares.    I do like opk's idea of recruiting a hole bunch of messengers which will allow a lot less micromanaging.

Also, thanks to those that sent additional supplies but I should be all set for now on crafted equipment.

Speed of Army w/equipment = 40.5

tips to make it faster:
1)become elf :P
2)time those messengers to the second :P (as long as u can click in the "claim sov" in less than 1 second. otherwise give the messengers some gap :P )
3) i belive that when u want to cancel (if u don't have army) u could send all u're gold away and all sov's would be auto-deleted withouth another 150 clicks (or more depending on how much clicks u must do to cancel a sov) might seem preaty drastic, but well... it's an idea. up to u to use it or not :P

Sending all your gold away could hit your troops as well.

Also there is an RP glitch for when that happens with sov, so I would be cautious  if there is a gold glitch as well.

Actually, I probably won't use the messenger trick as much as I thought I may need it.  At a speed of 40.5 it only takes about 10 minutes to go out 7 squares from my city which is pretty much the extent what is needed to claim 150 sov squares.

I will take the time to click/cancel my way through at the end once I am done with my experiment.

Thanks for the suggestions

No Fair.. you can't do something of this magnitude and NOT have a dwarf to make sure it is done right. Thusly, I will join your you quest for knowledge.. 150 sov lvl 1 tiles (with some others higher as I'm not reducing them - yet) :D

(*walks away wondering what is world have I gotten myself into)
